How Leo got out of debt

Leo, a blogger over at ZenHabits and an excellent writer, recently posted about his achievement of becoming debt-free.  With so many people crippled (or at least stressed) by the amount of debt they carry, I want to pass along his tips.
An important factor was the creation of a spending plan for each paycheck:
I don’t like [...]

The final season

The tree is up, lit, and decorated. If I sound proud, it’s because it took some agonizing work. We have an artificial Christmas tree at home because family members have serious allergies that flare up near a “live” tree. The quasi-environmentalist in me is wincing at the fact that this is the [...]

I made the list

The world’s average income is $5,000 per person per year.  My income is considerably higher than that.  There’s an online calculator that helps you compare your income to the world’s economic reality.  The tool is not perfect.  Actually, it’s flawed in that it only compares income, not accumulated wealth, which would put most Americans even [...]

A hundred years from now…

I can hardly imagine what life will be like in 100 years, but some forward thinking fellow did just that over a century ago.  Here’s a link to his forecast that was printed in The Ladies’ Home Journal of 1900.
It’s amazing how many of these predictions have become reality.  This link gives a progress report.

101 things about me (part four)

I love dark chocolate.
I was very moved to visit the Anne Frank house in Amsterdam. You can see a church steeple and hear the bells ring from the room where she and her family hid from the Nazis.
My favorite Communion hymn is “I Come with Joy”.
I like to go fishing but I never want [...]

Hurricane Katrina was over and I was relieved. I’d been glued to CNN and the Weather Channel for days, fearful of heavy damage to the Gulf Coast. The eye had passed through my parents’ hometown of Slidell, Louisiana and, by all accounts, it wasn’t as bad as anticipated. My parents had evacuated [...]

Gordon Atkinson, a Baptist pastor whose writings I greatly admire for their honesty and clarity, has posted an excellent article “Fighting Over the New Testament” on his blog, Real Live Preacher. He writes here in an easy-to-read way about the ways we humans tend to construct theology…sometimes quite dogmatically…and often miss the point.
Given how [...]

I have never played golf, but sometimes think I might like it.
My favorite foods are seafoods: crabs, shrimp, crawfish, catfish, lobster and scallops.
I am one of the Baby Boomer generation, born in 1956.
I love preaching. It’s an awesome responsibility and one I take very seriously.
I check email daily, usually several times a day.
I am [...]

That’s the reason Christians should be active environmentalists. In some cases, good stewardship of the earth can also mean real cost savings too. A Compact Fluorescent Light (CFL) can save $30-$100 in energy costs over the life of the bulb. And if more of us made the change, the results would add [...]

Need a bigger barn?

With this week’s lectionary reading about the “rich fool who built bigger barns” in mind, I share this post from the Frugalist website, which offers 147 tips for better, healthier living. There are some notable suggestions for financial health too.
John Wesley, founder of the Methodist movement, said we should earn all we can and [...]

Where do we fit?

On a map outlining the world’s religions, Protestant Christians are a mere 5.6% of the planet’s population. Sometimes we act as though the world revolves around us, but this visually shakes up that notion. Click the map to enlarge.

101 things about me (part deux)

Travel is a great joy for me…seeing God’s world opens my eyes to the differences and commonalities among people and cultures.
I have been privileged to visit fourteen different countries or territories. Some more than once.
I think Ohio sweet corn is the best corn in the world.
I usually plant tomatoes in my backyard in summer. [...]
